Terminate Test Terror - Test Taking Tips

With a little practice, most people can get help from their unconscious mind when trying to remember learned facts. Knowing how to access the unconscious mind will give students of any age a tremendous advantage when taking test. The key to effective test taking is staying relaxed. The “Blue Diamond” technique is great for staying relaxed, as is Emotional Freedom technique (EFT.)

Below are eight techniques you can use to access the unconscious mind to choose or verify test answers. True/False questions are the easiest to answer using these techniques. For multiple choice questions, discard the response you know are wrong and then ask ‘yes' or ‘no' on the others. If an essay answer is called for, asking the questions such as, “Are there all these facts correct?” “Should I expand the answer?”   There are other techniques that can be used to help the unconscious mind assist with answering essay questions.

Because, the unconscious mind is like an attic - holding memories of every significant emotional experience, miscellaneous unused information, facts and knowledge, the blueprint of perfect health, attitudes, beliefs, prejudges, biases, and so much more that we are unaware of, these tips can be used in many many ways - determining which foods to eat, habits to changes, actions to take. Etc.   Remember that the unconscious mind cannot tell you how someone else feels, nor foretell the future. A question such as "Will I get the job at XYZ Company?” is something that your unconscious mind would not know.   Therefore, avoid using these techniques in those types questions.

*      Make a circle with the thumb and index finger (or any other, if the index finger feels too strong) of your non-dominant hand.   Hold these two fingers firmly together.   Use the thumb and index finger of your dominant hand as a "beak," which you insert into the hole and then try to open it up. There will usually be more resistance for the correct answer.

*    Make a circle (as above).   Make a hook with the index finger of your other hand.   Place it in the circle and pull where the two fingers meet to see if you can separate them.

*    Hold your index finger out straight and strong.   Use your middle finger to push down on it just behind the nail

*    Tell your unconscious mind you want smooth to be "yes" and sticky to be "no."   Rub your palms together.

*    Tell your unconscious mind you want smooth to be "yes" and sticky to be "no."   Rub the end of your index

finger in one direction over your thumb nail.

*    Tell your unconscious mind you want smooth to be "yes" and sticky to be "no."   Rub a plastic credit card

Ideomotor Response Methods

(These have been expanded on by Rossi and Cheek in their seminal work :   Mind-Body Therapy:   Methods of Ideodynamic Healing in Hypnosis.   Canada:   Penguin Books, 1988.)

*    Place hand on a surface where it can be relaxed.   Close your eyes, take a deep breath and, ask unconscious mind to co-operate by asking, “Unconscious mind, I want you to co-operate and help me. Are you ready to co-operate and help me now?” There usually is an involuntary finger movement.” If there is not an automatic movement, take another deep breath, close your eyes, and restate the question, “Unconscious mind, I want you to co-operate. Are you ready to co-operate and help me?”   If you get no response, move to a different technique and come back to this one later. Next, ask, “Please show me the signal you wish to use to indicate ‘yes.'”   You should get a repeat of the finger that moved. Thank the unconscious. Then ask, “Show me which finger you wish to use to signal “no.” Thank the unconscious. To confirm, raise or twitch the   ‘no' finger. Immediately ask unconscious mind, “Is this the finger for ‘no'.” There should be a ‘yes' answer. You can also ask which finger the unconscious wishes to use to indicate, ‘don't know' and ‘don't want to say.'

*    Set hand on a flat surface. Relax and ask for a "yes" and let your index finger rise off the surface.   Don't force it, just stay relaxed. Ask for a "no" and do the same with the same finger.   "Yes" will have risen higher.

*  Pendulum Technique *

A pendulum is one of the most useful tools that you can learn to master.

Your unconscious mind can tell you many things you may not consciously understand. It is easy to make a pendulum using a ring, bead, necklace, washer, etc suspended on a string, thread, or light chain. Make sure it swings freely in all 360 degrees.

Lightly holding the pendulum between thumb and forefinger, with you arm steady on a desk or table, resting behind the elbow, ask your unconscious mind, “show me yes” and note how it swings. Then ask “show me no” and remember that swing (usually 90 o to yes). Show me “I don't know”.

Once you have ascertained your pendulum's directions, ask a couple of test questions that you know there is only one yes or no answer to. Check for both yes and no responses. An example might be, " Do I drive a red car?" “Did I flunk algebra?”   Check that your pendulum is indicating the appropriate reply for the question. If it does not, start again and be sure that you understand the different directions as indicated by your pendulum.

Then use the pendulum to select your answer.
