NEW Toxic Baby Bottles
A recent study on plastic baby bottles showed that all of the five leading brands of bottles tested leached excessive levels of bisphenol A into liquids contained within. Bisphenol A is one of a variety of toxic chemicals that are leached into our liquid, food, and environment through common plastics. Environment California has released their study Toxic Baby Bottles: Scientific Study Finds Leaching Chemicals in Clear Plastic Baby Bottles in February 2007.
Bisphenol A is linked to chromosome sorting errors, early onset of puberty, obesity, diabetes, impaired brain development, impaired immune function, increased cancer cell growth, sperm defects, miscarriage, and impaired female reproductive development. Pregnant women and children should especially avoid exposure to bisphenol A.
Avoid
all plastic baby bottles on the market by using glass bottles or a safer non-polycarbonate
plastic for infant feeding. Choose wooden toys instead of plastic toys, particularly
PVC toys or soft plastics. Opt for ceramic, glass, and metal dishware and
utensils, instead of plastic dishes or plastic coated utensils. Carry a lightweight
stainless steel water container instead of a plastic water bottle. Most importantly,
governments and manufacturers must take responsibility for testing new chemicals
and ensuring their safety before introducing to consumers.
Planned Home Births Safe
Planned home births for low risk women in the United States are associated with similar safety and less medical intervention as low risk hospital births, finds a study published in the British Medical Journal, June 18, 2005.
In the largest study of its kind internationally to date, researchers analyzed over 5000 home births involving certified professional midwives across the United States and Canada in 2000. Outcomes and medical interventions were compared with those of low risk hospital births.
Rates of medical intervention , such as epidural, forceps and caesarean section, were lower for planned home births than for low risk hospital births . Planned home births also had a low mortality rate during labor and delivery, similar to that in most studies of low risk hospital births in North America . A high degree of safety and maternal satisfaction were reported, and over 87% of mothers and babies did not require transfer to hospital .
"Our study of certified professional midwives suggests that they achieve good outcomes among low risk women without routine use of expensive hospital interventions," say the authors. "This evidence supports the American Public Health Association's recommendation to increase access to out of hospital maternity care services with direct entry midwives in the United States."
